DESCRIPTION
South Puget Sound Salmon Enhancement Group (SPSSEG) used this funding for restoration on the Mashel River. The mainstem of the Mashel River (river miles 4.4 to 6.7) is an important spawning and rearing area for Chinook, steelhead and coho. SRFB funds were used for the final design, permitting, construction, and implementation monitoring. Construction included 13 engineered log jams: 3 large meander jams and 1 small apex jam at Smallwood Park; 6 main channel apex and meander jams at reaches 1 and 2; 3 small side channel jams at reaches 1 and 2. The construction access was planted with native plants, as was the riparian area. The Nisqually Watershed Education Project, Nisqually Stream Stewards, and Pierce County Stream Team partnered with SPSSEG to engage volunteers in riparian planting, maintenance and monitoring. The Nisqually Tribe's EPA Mashel Monitoring Project provided additional pre-project and post-project implementation monitoring.1 Restoration is a priority in the Nisqually Chinook Recovery Plan (2001) and is supported by a multi-species Ecosystem Diagnosis and Treatment (EDT) analysis. A Technical Memorandum was developed which presents an assessment of potential habitat restoration actions, both in the watershed and within seven individual stream reaches (Watershed Professionals Network 2004).
