DESCRIPTION
The Nisqually Land Trust used this funding to acquire 60 acres of shoreline property and riparian habitat along the Nisqually River and Ohop Creek. The purchase of these properties was reviewed and approved by the Nisqually Salmon Recovery Workgroup, as required in the grant agreement. Each property resulted in protection of a key habitat piece that was critical to salmon recovery in the Nisqually watershed. The Eaton property (40 acres) is a key element for restoration of Ohop Creek. Bothe the Duncan (9 acres) and Wilcox (11 acres) provide critical additions to an already-protected section of shoreline. The acreage target of this project was 100 acres. The project fell short of this target because a few smaller, less expensive properties with important habitat values were offered for sale to Nisqually Land Trust. Overall, 0.8 miles of Nisqually River shoreline and 0.2 miles of Ohop Creek shoreline were acquired for the benefit of Chinook salmon and other salmonids.
