DESCRIPTION
This project focused on the lower 0.7 miles of the Mashel River; which includes vital spawning and rearing habitat for chinook, coho, pink, steelhead, and cutthroat trout. This project decommissioned or modified 0.5 miles of a previous washed-out road in the lower Mashel River valley to stop and prevent future fine sediment input. The focus was to control rain surface runoff and prevent future landslides, by removing culverts, adding drainage dips and eliminating side-cast material. The project directly enhanced salmon habitat by adding several pieces of Large Woody Debris (LWD) in the same reach as recommended by the Mashel River Watershed Analysis (DNR 1997). This reach is lacking in quantity and quality of pool habitat and poor gravel substrate (i.e. embedded and poorly sorted). The primary purpose of these in-stream wood pieces will be to promote gravel sorting, form pools, increase cover, and reduce bank erosion. The secondary objective of this project was to enhance the deciduous dominant riparian vegetation with coniferous plantings. This jump-started forest succession in this previously logged area, as recommended in the Mashel River Watershed Analysis (DNR 1997), and re-vegetated areas which are now dominated by invasive species (i.e. blackberries and reed canary grass).
