DESCRIPTION
This project focused on the lower 0.4 miles of Yelm Creek, which is very important spawning and rearing habitat for chum and coho, as well as steelhead and cutthroat trout. Occasionally pink and chinook salmon also utilize this creek. The project objective was to improve rearing and spawning habitat and increase the overall available salmon habitat. These objectives were accomplished by re-constructing an historic off-channel pond and adding wood for juvenile cover. The spawning habitat was improved by excluding livestock from several hundred meters of creek, which are detrimental to incubating salmon eggs. Additional habitat was made available by ensuring passage at a logjam/cascade in a canyon, which has made salmon passage to the upper basin impossible. Restoring access at the logjam will give salmon access to up to 10 miles of stream and tributary habitat. Although most of the gained habitat has intermittent flow, some high quality habitat upstream is currently inaccessible. An existing fence was improved to ensure livestock exclusion from the creek. Livestock access has increased erosion and severely degraded salmon habitat in various places, impaired water quality and degraded the riparian vegetation. This project improved the riparian vegetation by planting creek and riverbanks without vegetation and inter-planting vegetated areas.
