DESCRIPTION
Nisqually Land Trust used this funding to purchase 53.5 acres of habitat situated on the mainstem Nisqually River. The Green Crow shoreline purchase permanently protects a section of the mainstream Nisqually River (WRIA 11) with approximately 2,500 feet of river frontage. The two parcels, one 32 acres and one 20 acres, are adjacent to 73 acres of land already owned by Nisqually Land Trust. Acquiring the parcels expanded this block of permanently protected habitat. Both parcels are undeveloped and have excellent shoreline habitat values. The larger parcel contains 26 acres of forested upland, including 16 acres of merchantable timber. The 20-acre parcel is in the floodplain, although it also contains some large timber. The land will remain undeveloped in perpetuity; this will facilitate improvement of natural salmon production of the mainstem Nisqually. This acquisition benefits all six salmonids present, especially Chinook salmon and steelhead, both species that depend on the mainstem for spawning and rearing.
