DESCRIPTION
Nisqually Land Trust used this funding to acquire for permanent protection a former dairy farm (the 96-acre Grauwen Farm) in the Ohop Creek Valley. This property, which contains an important salmon stream and riparian habitat, was threatened with development that would severely degrade the stream and habitat. The property consists of of wetland pasture and uplands with several outbuildings and an agricultural waste lagoon. No residences are present on the property, although residences could have been developed on the upland portion of the property. The majority of the farm's acreage is low-lying pasture on both sides of approximately 1/2 mile of Ohop Creek. Ohop Creek is the third largest tributary to the Nisqually River and provides important salmonid habitat for several species. Protection of the Grauwen Farm provides for permanent protection for an important section of this stream and will allow implementation of salmon habitat restoration on the property.
