DESCRIPTION
The 2002 acquisition of 13.36 acres of land along Dogfish Creek in Poulsbo, north end of Liberty Bay, Puget Sound, has been designated as parkland, and set aside for public access and habitat restoration. The estuary of Dogfish Creek is a designated shoreline conservancy area, and has been identified as a salmon-bearing stream including chinook, coho, chum, steelhead, and sea-run cutthroat trout. The 2003 replacement of a 5-foot culvert with an 88 foot bridge restored the natural estuarine flow, and was the first step in protecting habitat functions and values at the site. This ALEA project will restore riparian and upland habitat necessary to the proper natural functioning of the estuary. Planting native vegetation and re-establishing plants and trees along the naturally self-sustaining aquatic riparian areas will contribute to a healthy, larger ecological landscape. Over 1/3 of a mile of looped trails and educational kiosks will help educate the public as to the value and function of the many ecological linkages. An overlook along the creek will provide a passive, pedestrian oriented access point to the public land and shoreline. This site includes at least three valuable wetlands and a host to many species of birds and wildlife. Over time, many restoration projects will be linked and will provide properly functioning conditions throughout the watershed, thus restoring the site to its natural state.
