DESCRIPTION
Great Peninsula Conservancy's primary project goal is to protect intact shoreline and high-quality nearshore habitat from development to support salmonid recovery within Puget Sound. By protecting this parcel now, GPC will prevent habitat degradation from conversion to residential development and the associated impacts of shoreline armoring, overwater structures, increased impervious surfaces, and loss of riparian cover. The proposed +/- 4.5 acre subject property is comprised of high-value estuarine nearshore, shoreline (+/- 400 ft.), and riparian forest habitat cited as a priority for restoration and protection in both local regional and habitat assessments. The project site located at the head of North Bay and provides juvenile salmon with a low energy refuge and a physiological transition zone with lower salinity levels. The property features older second/third-growth riparian forest that provides large woody debris and vegetation that enhance shade and produce important food sources for migrating salmon, especially Puget Sound Chinook. This project will advance regional recovery of ESA-listed Puget SoundChinook and other multiple salmonid species including chum (summer &fall) and coho salmon and cutthroat trout. Protecting these parcels willenhance estuary processes, providing critical rearing refuge as well astransitional and migratory fish habitat.
