DESCRIPTION
Great Peninsula Conservancy successfully protected 41.98 acres of riparian habitat on Curley Creek and Banner Creek, which represents some of the best salmon habitat conservation opportunities within a geographic envelope encompassing lower Curley Creek and Banner Creek, from the estuary to Sedgwick Road in Kitsap County. The acquired properties lie along 3,000 ft of Curley Creek and 1,500 ft of Banner Creek. This project built upon the work done through the SRFB-funded Curley Creek Estuary Acquisition (#02-1592) and Curley Creek Acquisition Feasibility (#14-1632) projects and completed the acquisition of the highest quality remaining steelhead and chum salmon habitat available on lower Curley Creek. The 2002 estuary acquisition project successfully purchased the majority of Curley Creek's estuary which Great Peninsula Conservancy has preserved for more than a decade. The 2014 feasibility project ranked parcels within the geographic envelope for acquisition and conducted outreach with landowners to gauge their potential willingness to sell. It conducted due diligence work to clarify the highest ranked property's title situation and ordered an appraisal as well. The now completed acquisition project followed through on this due diligence work and completed the purchase of the highest quality habitat available within the feasibility project's geographic envelope. Lower Curley Creek provides habitat for chum and coho salmon, and steelhead trout. Note that the original proposal was to acquire 29.83 acres along 2,068 ft of stream. When the property proposed for acquistion was instead donated, Great Peninsula expanded the scope of the grant to acquire other nearby priority properties.
