DESCRIPTION
This project improved fish passage by removing two large, concrete, short pipes that were in the stream. This allowed migrating fish to swim further upstream in the Purdy Creek watershed to find suitable stream beds for spawning, increasing the overall availability of spawning grounds for salmon in the stream system. The removal of these structures enhanced channel complexity, creating proper habitat for anadromous fish. Another goal was to remove invasive species on the site including Scotch broom, Evergreen blackberry, and Holly, allowing native plantings to compete against the noxious weeds and overtake the riparian area to create suitable wildlife habitat and a functional stream buffer.
This is a Backyard Habitat project managed by the Kitsap Conservation District.
