DESCRIPTION
Crescent Creek is a direct tributary to Puget Sound flowing approximately 3 miles from Crescent Lake to Gig Harbor. Crescent Creek enters Puget Sound in the northeast corner of Gig Harbor through an undersized culvert in 96th Street NW/Vernhardson Street. Crescent Creek supports fall Chinook salmon, winter steelhead, fall chum and coho. The culvert restricts tidal flow, inhibits fish passage at some tidal elevations, and fragments the estuary. This project would complete a feasibility study to evaluate fish passage, tidal hydrology, and estuarine function to prescribe a design for a new bridge structure to span the historic opening of the estuary. This project was identified as a priority by the WRIA 15 Prioritization and Development project (06-2271) and would build upon restoration work recently complete on the other side of the Harbor on North Creek.
South Puget Sound Salmon Enhancement Group completed a feasibility study and conceptual alternative analysis to replace the culvert restricting fish passage and tidal flow at the mouth of Crescent Creek, a direct tributary to Puget Sound. Crescent Creek flows approximately three miles from Crescent Lake to Gig Harbor. Crescent Creek enters Puget Sound in the northeast corner of Gig Harbor through an undersized culvert under 96th Street NW/Vernhardson Street. Crescent Creek supports fall Chinook salmon, winter steelhead, fall chum and Coho. The culvert restricts tidal flow, inhibits fish passage at tidal elevations below 9 feet (MLLW), and fragments the estuary. This project completed a feasibility study to evaluate fish passage, tidal hydrology, and estuarine function and prescribes design alternatives for a range of structures retrofit or replacements options to improve fish passage and tidal hydrology. This project was identified as a priority by the WRIA 15 Prioritization and Development project (06-2271) and the West Sound Watershed salmon recovery work plan.
