This project acquired the 34.5-acre Pilot Point parcel, which prevented the sale for residential development planned for 5-6 single-family homes. This acquisiton, through conservation has resulted in the protection from degradation of the existing excellent healthly eelgrass beds and riparian freshwater streams. If infrastructure installation and other human impacts had been allowed by the loss of protection through acquisition, Pilot Point would have seen degradation of this high quality habitat and would have permanently disrupted the natural landscape. Conservation of Pilot Point protects and adds to the 400-plus acres of protected land along the north Kitsap shoreline. Kitsap County Parks and Recreation through acquisition will manage and maintain for protection of important nearshore fish habitat for Bull trout, Chinook, chum, and coho. WIRA 15 will provide the critical monitoring as per the site Stewardship Plan. The Pilot Point acquisition now preserves the coastal bluffs, which in turn maintains many ecological processes: sediment transport, nutrient cycling, and transfer of fresh water into the nearshore environment. The unspoiled shoreline currently supplies healthy eelgrass beds with nutrients, freshwater, and refuge vital to migrating juvenile and adult salmon survival. The Estuary and Salmon Restoration Program contributed $500,000, the Salmon Recovery Funding Board provided $460,000 and National Coastal Wetlands Conservation Grant funding provided $1,000,000 as matching funds promoting salmon recovery. Private donation from the Trust For Public Lands and Kitsap County local funds provided the final match.
