DESCRIPTION
The Suquamish Tribe used grant funds to remove anthropogenic (cut) wood from 1.5 acres at Doe-Kag-Wats marsh in order to improve estuarine marsh conditions. Doe-Kag-Wats is located on the Port Madison Indian Reservation located approximately 1.5 miles east of the town of Indianola in north Kitsap County. Removal of cut wood is expected to 1) increase the area occupied by native marsh vegetation and overall marsh primary productivity; 2) increase the volume of tidal water exchanged with Port Madison Bay; 3) improve habitat conditions for rearing salmonids; and 4) increase prey abundance for rearing salmonids. This project was designed to benefit listed Puget Sound Chinook salmon, as well as chum, coho, and pink salmon, and coastal cutthroat trout. This project targeted the number one identified nearshore process that is a limiting factor for salmonids and salmonid forage species in the West Sound Watershed: loss and degradation of saltwater marsh. Sponsor did not include the full project design cost in their proposal but included the full costs when billing RCO. RCO's contribution to the project did not change.
