This project utilized final designs and permits previously developed under contract #10-1875 to completely remove a creosote bulkhead, rip rap armor, and fill along a bluff backed beach in Penrose Point State Park. The bulkhead was positioned in a divergence zone at the head of a long, natural low tide spit, at the upstream end of drift cell which is approximately ½ mile long. Removal of the bulkhead reconnected bluff and riparian processes to the nearshore ecosystem, restored sediment transport processes, improved the beach profile for rearing and foraging salmonids, specifically fry migrant Chinook, coho, chum and pink salmon, and enhanced forage fish spawning habitat. The project reach, within Penrose Point State Park, on Case Inlet in South Puget Sound, exhibits all of the key nearshore habitat types. However, habitat and habitat forming processes in the park were impaired by the 700-foot long creosote bulkhead with rip rap toe protection. In February 2013 this bulkhead, rip rap and fill were removed. Wood was placed along the shoreline and the restored area was replanted with native grasses, forbes, sedges, trees, and shrubs. Two interpretive signs were installed near the park entrance and at the restoration site in April 2014.
