Great Peninsula Conservancy will use this grant to acquire ~6.5 acres (fee-simple) of a coastal inlet estuary at the head of Rocky Bay, Case Inlet, Pierce County. This project protects a Rocky Bay estuary that is in near reference condition and is a high regional and local priority, benefitting multiple species of salmon including ESA listed chinook and steelhead; summer and fall run chum; coho and cutthroat. Protecting these two parcels will ensure intact shoreline, estuary and stream channel processes, providing critical rearing, refuge, transitional and migratory fish habitat. The site includes an active channel migration zone for Rocky Creek, a regionally significant stream and wetland complex that over the past 10 years has received ~ $1 million dollars (primarily SRFB funding) to replace fish barriers and restore of fish passage from the creek estuary to headwater areas. The West Sound Lead Entity strategy and So. Sound Chapter of the Puget Sound Salmon Recovery Plan place high priority on protection of highly functional nearshore, like this one, that include naturally intact intertidal areas, saltwater marshes and estuaries with associated older second growth riparian forests. The site is ranked # 1 in habitat quality in the Pentec 2003 Pierce County Nearshore Assessment and is identified as a project of regional significance in the Puget Sound Nearshore Ecosystem Restoration Project Strategy Plan completed in 2012.
