DESCRIPTION
This 252 acre acquisition added to Phase 1 of the North Kitsap Heritage Park creates and protects a 700-acre area near Kingston on the Kitsap Peninsula. This project permanently protects the headwaters of two priority salmon-bearing streams: Grovers Creek is the most significant salmonid stream in the as yet undeveloped North Kitsap lowland forest area north of the Port Madison Indian reservation, and is the largest freshwater source to Miller Bay. The project site also contains the headwaters of unnamed stream # 15.0308, which is a significant freshwater source for the Carpenter Creek Estuary and is known salmonid habitat. The Carpenter Creek Estuary's natural tidal function will be restored in 2011, with an investment of $2.8M from the Washington State legislature. The project site was part of a commercial forest until recently, and is now at risk for conversion to housing development. The lead entity chose this geographic area to begin the Kitsap water typing project (#09-1960) because of the complexity of the freshwater systems and the importance to document stream location and fish utilization. Grovers Creek is known steelhead habitat, which are listed as threatened under the U.S. ESA and for which there is not yet a recovery plan. This park, including this acquisition, has tremendous local community support including: elected officials (county, city and tribal), the current property owner (Olympic Property Group), and various stewardship groups.
