DESCRIPTION
This project removed a 4-foot barrier culvert on McCormick Creek on Tacoma Public Utilities property, near the City of Gig Harbor. The project removed the culvert and a large fill prism of the utility access road to daylight a 50-foot long by 10-12 foot wide stream channel. Removal of the barrier now allows for unimpeded fish migration for all life stages to an upstream wetland complex. The project was completed through a partnership with Tacoma Power in which Tacoma Engineers design the project with review by Engineers at the request of SPSSEG, and Tacoma Power supported over 80% of the construction contract. MVG LLC constructed the project under contract with Tacoma Power. Project efforts also included removal of invasive Himalayan Blackberry which was choking part of the stream channel, followed by riparian restoration. Through partnership with the Pierce Conservation Stream Team and SPSSEG, 52 volunteers attended a planting event to help replant the project site with 550 native trees and shrubs.
