DESCRIPTION
This potential project is located on the northeast section of VonGeldern Cove. This project was identified by the 'Strategic Identification of Areas and Projects for Nearshore Restoration throughout Key Peninsula-Gig Harbor-Islands Watershed, WRIA 15, Washington' report prepared by the South Puget Sound Salmon Enhancement Group. It was also identified and targeted as one of six near-term restoration projects, and developed with detailed pre-project plans including 30% engineering designs.
The project objective is to remove up to five bukheads from private properties. The approach is to remove the vertical pile bulkheads and grade the upper beach and upland area towards a more natural, gently sloping profile. The proposed toe of slope would be moved 15-20 feet landward of the existing bulkhead toe to allow for the colonization of saltmarsh vegetation and wave energy dissipation. The site presents a good opportunity for restoration as the shoreline armor appears to be unnecessary given the low wave energy and low erosion potential.
A feasibility and assessment study of the bulkhead removal and beach enhancement has been prepared by Coastal Geologic Services Inc. (November 2010).
