DESCRIPTION
Cascade Land Conservancy, in partnership with Pierce County Parks and Recreation, is pursuing funds to acquire and permanently protect a 94-acre site at the southern end of the Key Peninsula in Kitsap County. Known as Devil's Head, the property has approximately one mile of high quality Puget Sound shoreline. Acquisition of the Devil's Head site and inclusion as a local park will preserve over 4500 feet of high quality shoreline and a small properly functioning pocket estuary. The pocket estuary is located within five miles of the Nisqually River which supports a stock of Chinook necessary for delisting under the Endangered Species Act. The Puget Sound Action Teams Regional Nearshore and Marine Chapter for the Puget Sound Salmon Recovery Plan and the South Puget Sound Salmonid Recovery Plan (2005) have rated this specific nearshore project as high priority for conservation. The Key Peninsula, Gig Harbor, and Islands Watershed Salmon Habitat Assessment (2003) has also identified this property as having habitat quality worthy of protection. In addition to the acquisition of the shoreline, the conservation of the forested uplands will include active feeder bluffs, two small creeks, wetlands, and two bald eagle nesting sites. By acquiring both the nearshore and uplands, the project will conserve the sediment supply and distribution, maintain water quality, and preserve other processes necessary for the long-term protection of the salmon habitat.
