DESCRIPTION
The Liberty Bay Foundation used this funding to reduce adverse effects of watershed development in Liberty Bay by controlling invasive species and revegetating disturbed upland sites adjacent to the nearshore. The improvements are expected to reduce pollution, aid recovery of intertidal primary juvenile salmon food items, and restore nearshore attributes to vital fish habitat. The native plant restoration project resulted in educating local residents about the benefits of natural shoreline protection and nearshore ecosystem conservation in a highly visible program with strong community support.
Puget Sound's Liberty Bay, located in Poulsbo, Kitsap County, is a regional estuary important to rearing juvenile and migrating adult salmonids, forage fish, smelt and herring spawning, benthic fauna, plant communities, and estuarine habitat types. The cumulative impacts of non-point source pollution, land-use, and marine activities have degraded conditions. Marine samples collected in the bay and its tributaries have routinely violated state standards. In addition, eroding shoreline bank failures, uncontrolled storm water runoff, and upland development has contributed to degradation of the bay.
