DESCRIPTION
The Mid-Puget Sound Fisheries Enhancement Group used this funding for a restoration project on Salmonberry Creek. The project created a side channel flowing through a series of ponds that mimic beaver pond rearing areas for coho and cutthroat and was designed to help alleviate the adult stranding that took place annually due to stream channelization and invasive plant species within this agricultural area. This stranding occurred before the salmon reached their spawning grounds. The project created 3.84 acres of wetland pond and off channel rearing habitat. The project increased habitat diversity by planting an upland berm of almost 1 acre and over 2 acres of wetland berm and landscape de-leveling. This area was completely devoid of riparian vegetation, therefore, a riparian buffer was re-established for an average of 100 feet wide along the created channel and the area between the new channel and the existing creek. All told, the project planted 16.95 acres of wetland and riparian area. The side channel added approximately 5,000 lineal feet of rearing habitat and eases adult migration through this channelized segment. This project is expected to significantly increase the juvenile coho and cutthroat numbers and survival rates. Conservation easements were secured for long-term protection of the project and the resource.
