DESCRIPTION
The City of Poulsbo used this funding to acquire 13.36 acres of upland habitat along Dogfish Creek estuary and to restore 1,200 feet of estuarine shoreline. The project is located on Liberty Bay on the west side of central Puget Sound. This project is contiguous to a very successful 2nd Round SRFB project: removal of a 5-foot culvert and construction of a bridge that restored over four acres of estuarine habitat. This shoreline/estuary complex is listed as critical habitat by NMFS for the recovery of Puget Sound Chinook salmon and is a designated shoreline conservancy area by Poulsbo zoning. Dogfish Creek has important runs of Chinook, coho, chum, steelhead salmon and sea-run cutthroat trout. This project is an integral component of the City Parks Department's Fish Park and urban public access. The project prevented development of a planned shopping center and office complex. In addition, public access on the site has provided educational opportunities through the removal of invasive species and restoration of one stream that crosses the property. The land is a designated park zone and is used as passive open space and set aside for future habitat restoration. The public continues to access the property through designated, environmentally friendly trails. Later interpretive signage throughout the park has highlighted many features, including the ecological interaction between the terrestrial and aquatic (freshwater and estuarine) environments and fish and wildlife. In addition to the acquisition of 13.36 acres, early and successful restoration and public access activities included major site preparation work, removal of invasive species, and laying out areas for future public access. Partners included the Suquamish Tribe, National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, DNR- ALEA funding, RCO-SFRB funding, local businesses, service organizations, non-profits and individual volunteers.
