DESCRIPTION
This is a design-build project to replace the partial barrier under NE Camano Dr. This culvert is the #3 highest Priority Index (WDFW habitat value) ranked culvert in the County, based on the 2014 Island County Fish Passage Barrier Inventory. (#1 Barnum Rd and #2 Russell Rd, are already scheduled for replacement in summer 2018). The potential habitat gain calculated includes 5936 meters of stream, 28,843 sq. meters of rearing habitat and 146 sq. meters of spawning habitat. The fish species likely to benefit include chum, coho, cutthroat and resident trout.
Island County Public Works proposes to use grant funding for construction of a barrier correction under N East Camano Drive. This project will replace the IC culverts #1300 and #1301 (WDFW site ID 1320092) and the removal of the culvert associated with the "beaver deceiver" (WDFW site ID 933079) 50 feet upstream from the main barriers. This will improve access for adult and juvenile coho, chum, cutthroat and resident trout to Kristoferson Creek Basin including excellent wetland rearing habitat above N East Camano Drive. These are the last remaining barriers to fish passage on Kristoferson Creek. Design is being funded by a Salmon Recovery Funding Board grant (18-1378). Two barriers were recently replaced downstream using salmon recovery funding (15-1050).
