DESCRIPTION
Substantial landowner fundraising and donations, along with grants from the USFWS and Island County, led to the acquisition of 64 acres of feeder bluff and tideland nearshore habitat. Indian Point is a wild and ecologically rich natural area with a rare maple forest community above an eroding feeder bluff along Admiralty Inlet. Old growth Douglas fir and maple trees, along with fresh water wetlands are scattered throughout the forest. Osprey, eagles, owls and hawks occupy the property along with a myriad of other native birds. With 2,140 feet of Puget Sound waterfront, this property includes several ravines that drain water and deposit rich nutrients to the expansive and sandy tideland beach below, benefiting migrating salmon and other marine life. The eroding feeder bluffs also deposit sediment to the shore below, helping maintain and form the shoreline to the north. There is no legal public access to this property. It is surrounded by private property with very steep bluffs at the water. This is a valuable benefit to wildlife since its remoteness provides a safe refuge from human interaction with abundant food and shelter. The property's expansive and sandy beach is open to the public, but access is across private tidelands south of the Dave Mackie County Park.
