DESCRIPTION
Problem: 2006-07 water quality monitoring results for Rocky Point watershed on Camano Island show exceedances state water quality standards for fecal coliform and elevated nitrate levels. Over 50% of the samples were above 400 cfu/100mL and several nitrate samples were over 2.5 mg/L.. The goal of this project is to identify fecal contamination sources and implement response strategies. This watershed is predominantly residential. While the sources of contamination have not been identified, potential contamination sources in the basins include: failing septic systems, pet waste, livestock, and wildlife.

Project Actions: This project will implement source identification and contamination response strategies. The project will characterize the extent and location of bacterial contamination in the contributing basin, identify bacteria sources, implement source control measures, and implement public education programs to improve water quality. An adaptive management approach will be used to ensure all project goals are met and adequate funding is available to complete all project deliverables.
