DESCRIPTION
In 1932, for reasons unknown, the Canadian Royal Air Force flew and completed an aerial photo survey of the San Juan Islands and the nearshore from Anacortes (including Guemes and Cypress Islands) to the Canadian Border. These photos, about 1000 for the entire flight and 500 for the San Juans, are warehoused in Ottawa. A local surveyor found them and alerted San Juan County to their existence. The Canadian government has a contractor that will scan these prints. Several partners are currently identified. This application is for the San Juan Island photos only. Skagit River Coop is interested in the photos for Skagit County. City of Bellingham is interested in either the photos for the county or city. Most importantly, WA DNR Photogrammetry department has volunteered to stich the photos together in one layer in exchange for a copy of the finished product. Old aerial photos are important for restoration planning. Some examples they could be used for are: 1. Freshwater stream recovery planning including riparian forest assessment, stream course assessment, and farm ponds/wetland locations. 2. Bulkhead removal off feeder bluffs or along the drift cell to understand location of historic vegetated edge relative to the current edge. 3. Extent and approximate type of marine riparian forest to plan for existing Marine riparian reforestation. 4. Will also help SJC Community Development create appropriate mitigation plans for shoreline enforcement (i.e. understand extent and type of sho
