DESCRIPTION
Project was approved via the PSAR Large Capital funding. In 2015 landowner decided to donate the property, awaiting title transfer completion to the Land Bank. ********** Kellet Bluff is located at the SW tip of Henry Island, a small non-ferry served island just off the NW side of San Juan Island. The Bluff is visible from locations across the Westside of San Juan Island, Haro Strait, and Vancouver Island. Strong currents and shelter provide habitat for migrating salmon. Mixing caused by the currents creates an unmatched locale for marine life. There are stunning views to and from the property which has remnant garryoak prairies, coniferous forests, striking evidence of glaciation, eelgrass habitat, protected sandy beach historic reefnet site. A cormorant rookery is located on the Westside of the peninsula. The outermost 62 acres are managed by the Bureau of Land Management.
Kellet Bluff is located at the SW tip of Henry Island, a small non-ferry served island just off the NW side of San Juan Island. The Hart property encompasses roughly 80 acres with shoreline on both the Haro Strait (over 1,500 feet) and Open Bay (nearly 1,400 feet). The Haro strait shoreline is rocky with extensive nearshore kelpbeds andtwo cormorant rookeries. The property hasseveral pocket beaches with overhanging vegetation and nearshore eelgrass beds on the Open Bay side. Additionally, Orcas frequent the area around the intertidal rocks of this shoreline. This is one of the highest priority areas for salmon recovery in the San Juans due to concentration of juvenile Chinook and existing protected shorelines and undeveloped properties. WRIA 2 has designated protection of habitat as the highest priority action for the area.
