False Bay Creek is perennial, drains the largest watershed on San Juan Island and has high potential for the restoration of anadromous fish. It is on the 303(d) list as a Category 5 waterbody impaired for bacteria (listing 45712). Water quality and the stream riparian habitat has been degraded from incompatible agricultural uses and residential development. The Stormwater plan identifies the area as “high priority risk” slated for a creek capacity improvement project to address chronic roadway flooding. The acquisition of a riparian easement on 3,530 feet of the Duff property will connect the University of Washington Biological Preserve and the San Juan County Land Bank’s False Creek Preserve doubling the contiguous miles protected and resulting in the permanent protection and subsequent restoration of 43% of the riparian corridor “bottom up” from False Bay. This will re-establish the ecological connection between False Bay and 1.2 miles and eight acres of protected riparian habitat. This project will immediately improve water quality by removing livestock from the stream and protecting the riparian area. Chinook salmon and their forage species the Pacific sand lance will benefit from improved water quality and reduced sediment. Coho will find improved spawning and rearing habitat in the riparian area and chum salmon will benefit from better spawning habitat. The match for this project is from the San Juan Islands Conservation District Local Assessment Funds.
