DESCRIPTION
Surfactant pollution is toxic to San Juan County's critical nearshore environments. The goal of Project Clean Stormwater is to better understand San Juan County's stormwater pollution from surfactants through sampling at two sites, identifying the pollution source(s), and informing pollution reduction programs. To achieve a reduction of surfactant inputs to the nearshore, Friends of the San Juans staff and volunteers will also create educational materials and conduct outreach with the public.
Activities:
1) Volunteers sample the sediments in the Friday Harbor aquarium and False Bay Creek twice a month to determine surfactant pollution levels. 2) Sample water from the Friday Harbor stormwater pipe during rain events. 3) Provide reports to WA Dept. of Ecology and present findings to local governments, civic groups, and residents (press, newsletter articles). 4) Create educational 'wallet guide' to limit use of items with surfactants. 5) Distribute educational materials. 6) Work with businesses to carry and promote less harmful products.
