DESCRIPTION
Outside of smaller juvenile salmonids, resource managers are largely unaware of what species and life-stages of salmon and trout use the nearshore and marine habitats and migration corridors within WRIA 2. They also are unaware of how, when and where these animals may move between habitats. Further, there is little understanding of the importance of these habitats and prey resources to the health and potential recovery of populations that use habitats in WRIA2. These basic data gaps in knowledge can limit strategic planning within the unique and diverse landscape of WRIA 2. This assessment provided data and analysis to help answer the following questions: When and where are resident and migratory salmon and trout species present including larger juvenile Chinook salmon? What life history types of Chinook salmon and other salmon and trout species are present in various areas of the WRIA? What is the distribution of juvenile Chinook salmon and other salmonids by habitat area? What populations of Chinook salmon are present? Are there patterns to these movements? This assessment is identified in the WRIA 2 salmon recovery plan and is a high priority in its 3 year implementation plan. This project will provide Puget Sound lead entities information about the relative importance of WRIA 2 habitat to bull trout, steelhead, Chinook salmon, as well as coho, and cutthroat populations from other WRIAs, providing a link between watershed-based recovery plans with nearshore plans, filling a gap in Puget Sound Recovery Plans. For detailed information please see the final report deliverable titled "Resident and Migrant Salmon and Trout Nearshore and Marine Habitat Use in WRIA 2," PRISM attachment #180233.
