DESCRIPTION
Friends of the San Juans used this funding for the San Juan County Salmon Habitat Protection Blueprint, to identify priority shoreline parcels for long-term voluntary protection through land acquisition, conservation easements, long-term stewardship plans and tax-incentive programs.
San Juan County's nearshore habitat provides critical resources for salmon and salmon prey "forage" fish. Protection of this critical habitat has been identified as the most important salmon recovery strategy for the San Juan Archipelago at both the local and regional scale.
Objectives of the San Juan County Salmon Habitat Protection Blueprint included:
1. Identifying priority nearshore sites for protection based on results from the San Juan County Forage Fish and Eelgrass surveys and other best available science;
2. Conducting landowner willingness assessments for priority sites;
3. Educating landowners about shoreline stewardship techniques;
4. Working with all relevant stakeholders to incorporate shoreline protection strategies into their planning and management plans;
5. Overlaying results of prioritization with landowner willingness assessments and develop a ranked list of priority nearshore parcels for land acquisition and conservation easements;
6. For highest ranked properties, further landowner outreach to determine feasibility of either acquisition or easements;
7. Work with the Land Bank, the Preservation Trust, San Juan County and Shoreline Landowners to implement priority salmon conservation objectives.
