DESCRIPTION
The Friends of the San Juans used this funding to undertake the Mud Bay Soft Shore Restoration Blueprint, which provides a scientifically based prioritization of forage fish spawning habitat restoration activities for a critical nearshore region of San Juan County. Report methods and findings have been shared with public and private landowners, land managers and other relevant entities such as the San Juan County Marine Resources Committee and the Lead Entity for Salmon Recovery. Before its initiation, the Mud Bay soft shore restoration project was amended to include a restoration feasibility assessment and prioritization and not full implementation of restoration.
The project geographic scope was expanded to include the entire priority shoreline of Mud Bay on Lopez Island, and all the potential soft shore restoration sites, not just the area of the county road ending. Due to the expanded scope of the restoration feasibility assessment, design outlines and habitat benefit characterization, permitting activities were not able to be completed as originally planned. Permitting and project implementation elements will be conducted with interested public and private landowners through a different grant cycle or funding source.
