DESCRIPTION
Friends of the San Juans used this funding to identify habitats utilized by surf smelt and pacific sand lance and subtidal vegetation supporting herring spawning with the accepted protocols. The Eelgrass Survey and Mapping Project completed comprehensive mapping of the deep water edge of eelgrass (Zostera marina) growth in San Juan County. The entire shoreline of San Juan County was surveyed for Z. marina from April 30, 2003 to September 25, 2003. The resulting eelgrass habitat data was integrated into the San Juan County nearshore habitat GIS database.
Identifying and mapping the San Juan Archipelago's nearshore eelgrass beds was phase two of the Forage Fish Spawning Habitat Assessment Project already undertaken by the Friends of the San Juans and San Juan County. This project has produced a comprehensive eelgrass inventory for San Juan County which will be used to identify eelgrass restoration sites, identify targets for land acquisition, increase public education for salmon recovery, and support salmon habitat protection strategies. Results are available on CD and on the web.
Surf smelt, sand lance, and herring spawn throughout the San Juan Archipelago where extensive eelgrass beds and graveled beaches nurse forage fish and salmon alike. "No net loss" regulations protect both spawning and eelgrass sites; but only where habitat is documented. To protect these habitats, spawn deposition site inventories and eelgrass boundaries must be completed and comprehensive.
