DESCRIPTION
The Friends of the San Juans used this funding for the San Juan County Forage Fish Project, which documented nearshore habitat supporting forage fish spawning activity within San Juan County. Once identified, these habitats can then be adequately protected under existing Washington State Administrative Code (Hydraulic Code WAC 220-110) and the San Juan County Shoreline Master Program. In addition, the project identified initial protection and restoration priorities for forage fish habitat, and it implemented a nearshore marine education campaign.
Project objectives were to identify important forage spawning habitats within San Juan County and initiate actions to reduce habitat loss, such as providing habitat information to resource agencies for regulation enforcement, acquisition of development rights, and habitat enhancement projects.
The project was a cooperative effort of governmental, educational, and non-governmental organizations. The San Juan County Marine Resources Committee provided the project design and protocols; they assisted with project outreach and education. Friends of the San Juans managed the project including field work with volunteer and professional field data collectors, an education program in the schools and community outreach, GIS data mapping and database creation, data analysis and reporting. WDFW provided field and lab training and quality control for samples. University of Washington Friday Harbor Labs provided lab support for sample analysis.
