DESCRIPTION
The Johnson Creek Triple Culverts project is a restoration project that seeks to construct the replacement of three adjacent, fish barrier culverts with a fish passable structure in order to open access to 15.6 acres of summer and winter rearing as well as 2.4 linear miles of spawning and rearing habitat. Replacement of these structures would also re-connect hydraulic processes within a wetland that is currently bisected roughly in half. Fall chinook, coho, steelhead, and cutthroat trout all inhabit this area and will benefit from the project. A tributary referred to as the Johnson B-Channel runs along the southern road boundary, within the road ditch, for over 600-feet before meeting Johnson Creek at the culvert outlets. This channel and the road threaten each other as there is no riparian buffer and road aggregate is actively eroding into the stream. Despite its artificial straightening and lack of habitat complexity, the B-Channel has historically contained some of the highest redd densities for the area (WDFW-Salmonid Stock Inventory Database). If awarded, these funds would go to construction of the structure replacement, roadway improvements including the addition of freeboard, and relocation of the B-Channel away from the road where we will construct habitat forming features in its new alignment. This project is located at culvert ID # 80001261 on the Hoko-Ozette Road in Clallam County.
