DESCRIPTION
The project
designs and constructs the replacement of Clallam County Road Culvert 80001275
and the Makah Tribal Hatchery water intake/diversion facility 19.0174 on
Wright's Creek, a Hoko River tributary. This is NOPLEs 2nd ranked passage
correction in the Pysht HUC 10. The culvert is ~180' upstream from the trib
confluence with the Hoko River. The hatchery intake is 60' upstream of the
county road culvert. The culvert is 67% passable and the diversion 33% passable
with excellent spawning and rearing habitat upstream. We expect these two barrier
structures in such close proximity combine to create a passage barrier worse
than either barrier taken alone. Due to the proximity of the structures, their
replacements need to be designed together as any changes in bed elevation
driven by either replacement will impact the other structures integrity and
potentially it's passability. A left bank tributary to Wright's Creek located
just upstream of the County culvert and downstream of the Hatchery diversion
leads to excellent off channel rearing. This tributary is oversteepened as a
result of road fill placement and stream realignment and, too steep to allow
fish passage. It also contains culvert #600370 with unknown passability. While
designing the crossing and diversion structures we will consider if site grades
can be adjusted and the tributary culvert removed to restore fish access to
this secondary tributary and excellent opportunity for off channel rearing.
Project will open .31 miles of habitat.
