This project proposes to acquire and restore approximately 31 acres of land with dynamic floodplain habitat and shoreline, located between River Mile 2.8 and 3.1 on the Elwha River. The goal of this acquisition is to protect some of the best salmon habitat in the Elwha River watershed by preventing floodplain modification and habitat degradation or loss. Most/all existing infrastructure will be decommissioned and the riparian buffers revegetated with native species. The property is a high priority in The Elwha River Watershed Conservation Prioritization, priority #2. This property contains habitat characteristics indicative of the best existing salmon habitat and ecosystem function. The property has 0.3 miles of the Elwha River. Much of the property is in the floodplain, river meander zone, or at high risk of erosion, and contains a mature forest canopy, providing shade for the river. This project will protect and restore habitat for the following ESA-listed species in the Elwha River: Chinook, Steelhead,and Bull Trout. Non-listed stocks of fish will also benefit including Coho, Chum, Pink, Sockeye, and Cutthroat trout.  Public access will be maintained via an existing easement for pedestrian travel & sports fishing. The property is adjacent to property owned by WDFW, & their access is legally through the property that would be conserved.  Conserving this property will ensure that this former Tribal homestead is once again available for use to host ceremonial gatherings.
