DESCRIPTION
This project ensures protection in perpetuity of the mouth of an intact river system from the mountains to the shore, including a vital estuary and critical nearshore salmon migration corridor along the Strait of Juan de Fuca for ESA-listed Puget Sound Chinook Salmon and other ESA salmon and steelhead species. This project did so by acquiring and restoring 279.92 acres. Fee simple acquisition also allowed the first phase of restoration which included removal of a house located in the nearshore and revegetation of the area, which was located near the confluences of Nelson Creek and the Lyre River. It is now open to the public.  Visitors to the Lyre can park at the end of Reynold Road.  From the parking areas, there is then a one mile walk down to the beach along a gentle former access road.  The walk takes visitors through a recently cut forest and then through an 80 year old stand before dropping down to the Strait-front area. It is an ideal spot for recreational activities like bird and wildlife viewing, surfing, picnicking, and beach walking. This property is located in Clallam County, along the Strait of Juan de Fuca, approximately 20 miles west of Port Angeles. It is situated on the Lyre River in the vicinity of a land formation called Low Point.  The property is also adjacent to a DNR campground, which shares its eastern boundary with the subject property.   Habitat types include estuary, nearshore, barrier beach, bluff-backed beach, continuous kelp beds, eagle
