The primary objective when decommissioning an existing road is to reduce road-related erosion or mass wasting and associated sediment delivery into aquatic systems. These roads all have high aquatic risk ratings. Typical work includes; removal of road fill at large stream crossings, pullback of unstable sidecast fillslope material, outsloping, constructing cross ditches and drainage swales, scarifying the roadbed, placement of logs and other organic matter along excavated slopes, mulching and seeding, and planting with native trees and shrubs.
