DESCRIPTION
Thirteen Engineered Log Jams were constructed in the Fall of 2020 along RM 14 of the upper Dungeness River on Olympic National Forest. Additional funding was requested by the Tribe to cover increased material and construction costs that exceeded our initial cost estimate from 2018. The bulk of this funding is being returned to NOPLE because project sponsor was able to complete scope of work using only 1/3 of the allocated money. The cost savings were realized by making two important logistical changes to the project: 1. Utilizing the forest harvest unit as the staging area for the wood saved considerable trucking costs. This way we didn't have to move the large woody debris to another staging area and the helicopter could pick up the trees directly from the wood source units. 2. Partnering with the WA Department of Natural Resources to create a staging area for the rock collars on State land less that 1 mile from the construction reach saved a great deal of helicopter flight time. Roughly half of the helicopter flights were scheduled to deliver the rock collar anchors. Having them so close made more efficient use of the helicopter enabling us to build all 13 structures to design specification.
