Coastal Watershed Institute (CWI) received funding from a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service National Coastal Wetland Conservation Grant, a Washington State Salmon Recovery Funding Board grant and an Estuary and Salmon Restoration Program grant for the Beach Lake Acquisition and Restoration Project-a conservation purchase and restoration of a 26 acre shoreline parcel adjacent to the Elwha River delta along the Strait of Juan de Fuca. The property was purchased and the agricultural and residential tenants were relocated by the time ESRP funds were awarded. This ESRP grant funded remaining unmet project needs to fully implement restoration of the project site. Specific actions included; multi-phased removal of ~11,000 cubic yards of derelict armor from an ~3 acre intertidal footprint, removal of 10 buildings and impervious surfaces, utility disconnection, utility continuity for neighboring properties, public outreach and education, infrastructure for public site visitation, native planting, weed control, and monitoring of biophysical properties of the restoration site. Primary habitat restored is marine nearshore, coastal wetlands and associated buffers. The project supports recovery of all migratory salmonid stocks and forage fish.
