DESCRIPTION
North Olympic Land Trust used this grant for fee-simple acquisition of 67.37 acres of important habitat for salmon and steelhead at the mouth of the Clallam River in Clallam Bay, western Clallam County, Washington. In a 2011 study, this parcel was identified as representing some of the best habitat for salmon recovery west of the Elwha River, with significant potential benefit for coho, chum, and chinook salmon as well as cutthroat and steelhead trout. Sixty acres of the property is Priority #3 in the Western Strait of Juan de Fuca Salmonid Habitat Conservation Plan. The property includes 0.53 miles of mainstem Clallam River (both sides), highly active floodplain/floodway, 0.25 miles of estuarine channel in Swamp Creek and tributaries, 2 fish-bearing forested wetlands, plus several short channel segments that provide diverse freshwater off-channel rearing habitat. There is high habitat diversity, moderately high fish species diversity, and high fish use. After acquisition, land management and stewardship efforts began immediately with the goal of restoring and fostering a healthy and resilient natural ecosystem. Initial tasks completed include thinning around existing conifers and the removal of invasive weeds such as Himalayan blackberry, Japanese knotweed, and reed canary grass. With a balanced foundation established, new seedlings have been planted. Looking to the long-term future, the Land Trust hopes to foster the regeneration of a mature forest with many associated benefits for native plants, wildlife, and climate mitigation. The site will be ideal for fishing and bird watching. It is adjacent to a County park. Public recreational access is provided via a short walk from the adjacent County park.
