DESCRIPTION
Coastal Watershed Institute (CWI) and Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe (JSKT), North Olympic Land Trust (NOLT), Clallam County (CC), Dungeness National Wildlife Refuge (DNWR) and Friends of the Dungeness National Wildlife Refuge (FDNWR) will work with up to 14 already identified willing private landowners along the Dungeness Spit drift cell to further develop and implement a suite of conservation measures to protect ~ 1.25 miles of feeder bluff shoreline. The sediments supplied by these feeder bluffs provide exceptional forage fish spawning habitat and provide the sediment supply that sustains the Dungeness Spit and makes Dungeness Bay an unparalleled fish and wildlife rearing area. Project seeks to protect unarmored shorelines by; developing a shoreline armor restriction approach on up to 1.25 mile of unarmored feeder bluff shoreline, extinguishing up to 8 development rights and purchasing up to 2 parcels and removing/relocating up to 3 dwellings away from eroding feeder bluffs. Project supports all nearshore dependent salmonid and forage fish species. Proposal will implement standard conservation measures while also further developing and performing necessary due diligence to apply new conservation approaches within the project area. We remove up to 3 homes currently at high risk of catastrophic bluff failure before they are lost over the edge. We will work with up to 11 landowners to develop and/or secure unarmored shoreline conservation easements. Project will also prevent development of up to 8 new shoreline parcels.
