The Dungeness River Floodplain Restoration-Kinkade phase project allowed for the purchase of fee-simple properties to restore, and forever conserve nearly 80 acres of floodplain habitat on the lower 11 miles of the Dungeness River. Habitats include active channel, side channels and floodplains and floodplain forests. The actions benefit ESA-listed chinook, bull trout, summer chum, and steelhead, along with coho, pinks, and fall chum. During the contract timeframe, several contract modifications were processed. Those modifications included time extensions, budget modification, and change the scope/work that expanded the work area and included conceptual design. The change in the scope of work/work areas allowed the Tribe the greatest flexibility and significant impact with meeting the goals of the grant. The total acres conserved exceeded the Tribe’s original goals of the grant. The acquisitions funded with this grant are instrumental to a larger restoration project that involves setting back a levee and reconnecting floodplain. This grant provided funding for conceptual design of the levee removal work. This restoration project was identified over 20 years ago as a priority project along the Dungeness River.
