DESCRIPTION
With funding and assistance from RCO, Dept. of Ecology, and the Jamestown S'Klallam Tribe, the Tribe was able to aquire and permenently protected 12.67 acres of high quality and high priority riparian habitat and associated wetlands, side-channel, and tributary habitats on the Dungeness River. The property is located in eastern Clallam County along the Dungeness River (WRIA18). This acquisition is adjacent to another Tribal-owned conservation property and near other publicly owned properties. This acquisition will bring this reach of the Dungeness River nearer to the critical mass of conservation ownership needed to do much needed channel restoration while also protecting existing quality critical habitat. This property includes a section of spring creek with is a highly productive tributary to the Dungeness River. This project benefits ESA Puget Sound Chinook, and Steelhead, as well as Bull Trout. Also benefited are, Cutthroat trout, Pink, Chum, and coho salmon as well as many other wildlife species. This property includes salmon spawning and rearing habitat. This project reduces the possibility of additional residential development within the channel migration zone (current regulations do not prevent development in this critical habitat). Protection of this land also prevents additional riverbank armoring which is often done to protect residential properties built in the floodplain. This property also is key to future efforts to restore natural fluvial processes in this important reach of the Dungeness River. Due to the successful completion of this project neighboring landowners have enganged with the Tribe to help advance the Tribe's salmon recovery goals.
