DESCRIPTION
The Pysht River Floodplain Restoration Project (Phase 3) was successfully completed by the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe in the summer of 2018. The project resulted in the construction of 30 logjams, 3 new side-channels and extensive riparian revegetation efforts between river mile 7.2 and 9.0 of the Pysht River. The project occurred on five contiguous properties: Gregory, Brown, Merrill and Ring, and North Olympic Land Trust. The Project used innovative techniques to protect critical infrastructure such as state route 112, while improving habitat for anadromous fish. The project has been subjected to multiple winter flows and has functioned well. We have observed positive habitat responses including rapid pool development, accumulation of gravels, side-channel development and increased floodplain connectivity. Salmon and steelhead spawning has been documented adjacent to several of the ELJ's including in locations where spawning habitat was known to be lacking. Landowner response to the project has been very positive to date. This project utilized volunteers as well as a WCC crew to complete riparian plantings.
