North Olympic Salmon Coalition restored a 1380 lineal feet of Sequim Bay beach, shoreline, and bluff, along the Eastern Strait of Juan de Fuca nearshore in Clallam County, WA, on land given by the Dawley family to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for conservation. The 1.5 acre shoreline restoration included removal of 450 feet of armoring and bulkheads, fill, an overwater cabin, a pier, driveway, and septic system. More than 648 tons of fill was removed from the nearshore, along with 5.7 tons of tires. The shoreline was re-contoured to blend into undisturbed adjacent beaches and 8 large logs and 4 rootwads were placed. Native plants were installed on 4.7 acres of the marine riparian zone. This project repaired habitat-sustaining shoreline processes and improved migration and survival of juvenile salmon, especially Jimmycomelately Creek ESA- listed Hood Canal summer chum. This project was located close to Jimmy Comelately Creek (0.5 miles), Pitship Pocket Estuary (2.5 miles), and Washington Harbor (4.5 miles), where other restoration actions have been completed. This project also improved water quality within Sequim Bay by removing toxic creosoted pilings.
