DESCRIPTION
This project added LWD on the mainstem of Salt Creek between river mile 2-3 and additional wood placement on five tributarty sites in the Salt Creek watershed. This section of Salt Creek exhibits channel incision of up to 1.5 m vertically and includes both pool-riffle and plane bed channel morphologies. This reach of Salt Creek includes historically heavily logged riparian areas and channnels which were subjected to intentional LWD salvage in the 1950's by the State of Washington in an attempt to improve fish passage. All complex logjams were removed then, and Salt Creek's riparian forests have been historically logged without buffers at least twice. Channel incision in portions of this reach have converted forced pool-riffle morphologies to plane-bed types. These changes have eliminated or reduced salmon spawning habitat, reduced rearing habitats, and isolated floodplain habitat from Salt Creek's mainstem. We used a heavy lift helicopter in August of 2010 to add LWD in the form of single key pieces or in complex logjam accumulations between river mile 2.0-3.0. 170 pieces were lifted into this reach during one 8 hour work day. The other portion of the this project involved the placement of LWD using ground based techniques on five tributary sites in the Salt Creek watershed. We identifed private property owners who were willing to host wood projects on their property. They included Chris Palmer, Coleman Byrnes, Steve & Mel Carlyle, Peter and Jane Vanderhoof, and Dave Colthorp. Additions of high quality LWD are necessary to provide aggradation storage sites in order to reverse incision processes and allow reconnection to the floodplain. The horizontal reconnection of habitat has been identified as the second highest priority for restoration in Salt Creek. This problem is treatable using LWD placement techniques that have been successfully used by the Lower Elwha Tribe at similar sites including Deep Creek, Little Hoko and East Twin Rivers. This project follows Phase 1 which occurred in 2006 when LWD was placed in River Mile 3-4 using a heavy lift helicopter.
