DESCRIPTION
The Morse Creek Riverine Restoration Project re-activated 1700' of channel and floodplain as it existed around 1939 prior to installation of a dike which pushed the river against the valley wall. The project, on Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife Property, restored high quality mainstem, side channel, and off-channel habitat in a stream reach which was severely degraded by human impacts. The abandoned channel was channelized, confined, over-steepened, diked and depleted of large wood, resulting in severe channel simplification. The abandoned straightened channel was extremely energetic and paved with large cobbles and boulders resulting in extremely poor fish habitat conditions for all life stages. Restoration work included 1) restoration of the 1939 stream channel, reconnection of the stream with 9.3 acres of flood plain, and 2) construction of 19 engineered log jams. Improvements benefit ESA listed steelhead , bull trout, pink salmon, coho salmon, chum salmon and out-planted Elwha chinook. Work specific to Phase II was the reconnection of a floodplain/wetland islolated by fill. Fill was removed and disposed of on an upland onsite location. Channels leading to and away from the floodplain were constructed and carry water at ~2yr flood levels and greater. The floodplain has been monitored for fish stranding when waters receded with none noted to date. Planting of floodplain adjacent to the channels and of the excavation spoils pile and maintenance of these plantings have been conducted as part of the work.
