DESCRIPTION
This nearshore project assessed the feasibility of restoring the Hoko River Estuary on Washington State Parks property. The project lands are managed for recreation and natural values and this proposed restoration located west of the Elwha was complementary to long-term management strategies. The Hoko is the largest watershed in WRIA 19 and this proposal builds on the purchase and protection of the Cowan Ranch which led to the SRFB-funded restoration of the Little Hoko River. Other nearby restoration has included floodplain and tributary restoration on the mainstem Hoko and Ellis Creek, the removal of culvert barriers on the Hoko (9000 Road Crossing) and restoration of Brownes Creek. This project explored the possibility of reactivating a meander cut off by human activities in the 1950s to help restore habitat-forming processes in the Lower Hoko River and increase critical estuary salmon rearing areas for multiple salmonids and along the Juan de Fuca migration corridor. Currently access into and out of the abandoned meander has been a factor limiting fish use. Specific project elements included: 1) Geomorphic Assessment, 2) Hydraulic Modeling, 3) Identification of a Pre-Conceptual Restoration Design Recommendation, and 4) Sharing results with the community.
